Order picking is probably one of the most important stages in logistics. Don't know what these documents are? This guide is for you.
What is order picking?
Order picking begins by taking the requested items from storage, whether in a factory warehouse or a store. They are then assembled before being dispatched to the customer in the quantities requested.
Order picking is an essential step in the logistics chain, since it is the key to customer satisfaction. Several factors determine the quality of order preparation:
- Speed of preparation,
- Reliability of the order processing system, avoiding errors,
- The chosen packaging method
Order picking, step by step
There are 4 main stages in order processing:
- Order preparation planning,
- The sampling route,
- Picking
- Order preparation for shipment
The two routing processes
There are two different picking systems. The system chosen by the warehouse.
Goods to the picker
In this system, the stock is automatically routed by the machines to the order picker, who is equipped with a table. This enables the order picker to pick the required items, while reducing warehouse movements and the margin for error.
The picker to the goods
In this process, the order picker fetches products directly from stock. To do this, he or she relies on a guidance system and handling equipment such as a forklift or order-picking truck.
Logistics documentation for order picking
Order preparation is based on a number of documents that will be used for all stages of the logistics process.
The order form
The purchase order is created when a sale is made between a supplier and a buyer. Although it is not mandatory, it secures sales by keeping a written record of the purchase. It comprises several elements:
- The identity of the issuer,
- The identity of the recipient,
- Information on products ordered (quantity, price),
- VAT amount,
- The date,
- Order number,
- Delivery date
Other information may also be included on the order form, such as payment method, terms of sale, delivery and cancellation.
Picking order
The picking order provides all product details, such as quantity and location in the warehouse. The aisle, Shelving and picker route are also indicated to simplify order picking.
Delivery note
The delivery note enables the final recipient to ensure that the products delivered are those ordered. At the same time, it provides the seller with proof that the customer has received the order. Companies often use electronic proof of delivery to simplify access to order delivery information.
Other documents
In addition to this documentation, order picking can also use other types of parts.
- The packing list contains the characteristics of the products in the package to be delivered,
- The waybill indicates to the carrier the destination to which the products are to be delivered,
- The tracking number is used to identify and follow the shipment of products from the warehouse to their destination.
