work handling equipment

Lifting equipment

Lifting equipment is often referred to as lifting gear.

Lifting equipment is used for material handling. It is used to lift and move heavy loads vertically and horizontally. This mainly involves equipment such as cranes, overhead travelling cranes, winches, jib cranes, carts, etc. Handling equipment enables loads to be handled and moved manually or mechanically. Equipment can be hydraulic or motorized.

Operating lifting equipment

To drive the various machines, you need to take the CACES training course, which stands for Certificats d'Aptitude à la Conduite En Sécurité. This training provides a certificate that is valid for 5 years throughout France. It is essential for companies in the industrial and commercial sectors.

CACES are categorized according to height and load capacity. Training courses are offered for the following CACES: 1A-1B-2A-2B-3-4-5-6-7. For example, CACES 1A enables you to drive a Pallet truck with a lifting height of less than 1.20 meters. CACES 3, on the other hand, allows you to operate a forklift truck with a maximum load of 6 tonnes.

Lifting equipment

  • Stacker: used to lift heavy loads from a height. It can be manual or electric. Most often used to lift pallet loads in warehouses.
  • Pallet truck : handling equipment that moves pallets manually or with electric assistance.
  • The lifting table: a flat surface for lifting heavy loads or people who need to work at height. The lift table is a fixed, electrically-powered piece of equipment that saves workers physical effort.
  • Lifting cranes: each has a different lifting capacity, in terms of both load and height. For example, a truck crane is a heavy-duty lifting machine equipped with caterpillar wheels and capable of lifting loads of up to 1,200 tonnes.
  • Gondolas: used to carry a person's load and perform work at height.

Lifting accessories

They are grouped into two categories:

  • Lifting accessories are complementary elements that connect the machine to the load being lifted.
  • Lifting equipment, on the other hand, is a fixed installation on a machine that raises and lowers a load. For example, a hoist is a device that can be adapted to several supports, enabling loads to be moved.
The lifting plan

A lifting plan is a means of ensuring that your lifting operations run smoothly. It is often produced by an engineer, and must comply with administrative standards and deadlines. It helps to ensure the safety of lifting operations.

A few safety tips

The use of lifting equipment, particularly on public worksites, represents a safety risk for workers. There are various risk situations, such as collisions, falls and mechanical failures, and every company has a duty to inform and provide the m necessary to ensure worker safety. A maintenance log is kept for each piece of lifting equipment.
