supermarket shelves

How do you organize supermarket shelves?

Organizing the shelves in your supermarket will boost your sales by encouraging customers to buy products they don't necessarily have on their shopping list. On this page, you'll find a wealth of useful shelving equipment.

Layout of supermarket shelves in France

Optimizing shelf placement is very important in your store. If you want to tempt your customers with products they wouldn't have thought of, put the necessities towards the back of your supermarket and make certain products hard to find. Consumers will then be obliged to go through all the shelves and may buy more than they came for.

Choose a large central aisle, but small shelves to block traffic and slow down your customers. They'll then see even more products and be more likely to buy them. Especially if there's a promotion, but we'll come back to that later!

To avoid getting your customers used to your store, change from time to time the location of the products you sell and the products themselves. This way, your customers won't develop buying habits and will spend more time in your supermarket.

It's also important to have no clocks or windows, so that shoppers don't notice the passage of time. The more time they spend in your store, the more they'll buy.

How do you organize a department?

Highlight the most expensive products in your aisle. Ideally, they should be located at eye level, while the less expensive products should be placed at the bottom of the shelf. If you have your own supermarket brand (private label), highlight it too. You can, for example, frame the shelf with signs indicating the brand's location.

Heads of shelves should be reserved for current products (often on special offer to draw customers in).

Don't forget to use facing to optimize product visibility. If a product is at the back of the shelf, the consumer won't necessarily look at it.

Don't place your fruit and vegetables on the shelf, but in a display in the center of the store. Some supermarkets place them at the front of the store to give their brand a good image.

As well as selling your products, don't forget that your employees also move around the shelves. You need to make it easy for them to do so.

Advertising: a buying appeal to consumers

Advertising and promotions in France are becoming increasingly common. But how do you sell even more to a consumer?

Promotions can be internal to a department, but in some stores, the products on sale can be found in a department dedicated to promotions. This encourages customers to go and see what you have to offer.

Put product packs on sale, for example, offering 50% off the second one purchased, or promoting 2 for the price of 1.

Bear in mind that your customer is also likely to buy products from France. You can then offer them a discount on purchases of these products over a certain minimum amount.

You can also include displays for special sales. Consumers will be in a hurry not to miss the promotion.

Placing products near the checkouts will encourage consumers to look at them while they're waiting to pass through. Display products from France to satisfy them, and an affordable price to make them think they're getting a good deal.

How should caddies and baskets be arranged?

Shopping carts are generally placed outside and within easy reach, whereas baskets are often difficult to find inside the store. This makes it easier for shoppers to fill a shopping cart, which has more space than a basket.
